Understanding Hyperpigmentation: Causes, Types, and Treatment Options (Part 1)

Lumi Beauty Studio’s skin condition of the month for June is hyperpigmentation. Just in time for summer! This month we’re going to teach you all about hyperpigmentation - definition, causes, types and treatment options. All the things! Are you ready to get started? Good, let’s go!

Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It occurs when certain areas of the skin become darker in color compared to the surrounding skin. While it is usually harmless, hyperpigmentation can be a source of self-consciousness and affect an individual's self-esteem. In this blog series, we will discuss the causes, types, and available treatment options for hyperpigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation can be caused by various factors, including:

1. Sun Exposure (UV Induced Hyperpigmentation): One of the leading causes of hyperpigmentation is excessive sun exposure. Ultraviolet (UV) rays stimulate the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. Prolonged exposure to the sun can lead to the formation of sunspots, freckles, uneven skin tone, uneven texture and skin cancer.

2. Hormonal Changes (Hormonally Induced Hyperpigmentation): Hormonal fluctuations, pregnancy and menopause, as well as the use of certain hormonal medications or contraceptives, can trigger hyperpigmentation. These conditions are often characterized by patches of darkened skin on the face, known as melasma.

3. Skin Inflammation/Injury (Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation or PIH): Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) occurs as a result of skin inflammation or injury, such as acne, eczema, or a cut or burn. The skin produces excess melanin in response to the inflammation, leading to dark spots or patches.

Want the short version? Just remember this:

1. Sun exposure = UV Induced Hyperpigmentaion

2. Hormonal Changes = Hormonally Induced Hyperpigmentation

3. Skin Inflamation/Injury = Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation or PIH

Are you thinking, “that’s great, but how do we treat hyperpigmentation?” Lumi Beauty Studio has you covered! We’ll see you next week when we discuss how to treat hyperpigmentation and skin discoloration.
